על ההבדל שבין אופטימיות לתקווה

ישנה הבחנה בין אופטימיות ובין תקווה. ואני מציעה לזנוח את הראשונה ולאחוז בשנייה: אופטימיות היא בסך הכול ההיפך מפסימיות: שני צדדים של אותה מטבע. בצד האחד ההנחה שיהיה בסדר; בצד השני ההנחה שיהיה רע. בשני המקרים, בשתי התפישות, זו אותה מטבע: נקודת המוצא היא שלא כל כך חשוב מה נעשה. משהו טוב, או משהו רע, יקרה.

תקווה, לעומת זאת, באה מגישה אחרת; תקווה, בשונה מאופטימיות, נשענת על ההכרה בעובדה שאנחנו לא יודעות מה יהיה, אין לנו שום דרך לדעת, אבל אנחנו כן יודעות שאפשר להשפיע על מה שיהיה: האפשרויות פתוחות, ובכוחנו לבחור, לנוע, להזיז, לעשות שיהיה טוב.
